Strøm Festival 2023: Launch at Glyptoteket with sound legend Gunner Møller Pedersen

Don’t miss the opening of this year’s Strøm Festival, which features a veritable sound legend.

Not many people know this, but during the 1970s and 1980s the Glyptotek was a breeding ground for Denmark’s electronic music scene. This evening we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of composer Gunner Møller Pedersen’s A SOUND YEAR, which was created especially for the Winter Garden in the Glyptotek. Come and hear the sound pioneer talk about 50 years of uncompromising work in the field of electronic music and a myriad of sound clips. The conversation will be in Danish.

A SOUND YEAR was played regularly from 1977 to 1999. It features 12 movements, one for each month of the year. The work has travelled the world and is regarded both in Denmark and Europe as a masterpiece of electronic music.

The composition of A SOUND YEAR took five years (1977-82), but the music has lasted. For many years it coloured the whole atmosphere of the Glyptotek and was performed more than 575 times in the Glyptotek’s Winter Garden alone.

ROOF TERRACE BAR
From 5.30 to 8.30 pm you can purchase tasty snacks and delicious drinks on the museum’s roof terrace and take in the views of the rooftops of Copenhagen. Access to the roof terrace is limited, but you can guarantee yourself a place by buying a beer in advance when you book your ticket to the event.

ABOUT GUNNER MØLLER PEDERSEN
The composer and sound pioneer Gunner Møller Pedersen was born in Aarhus in 1943. During the 1970s he established his own Octopus Studio, founded Dansk Elektronmusik Selskab and performed various works at the Glyptotek, including MUSIKZAG (1972), PANOPTICONCERT (1974) and A SOUND YEAR (1977-82). He has also composed music for a number of Danish films by directors such as Niels Malmros and Jørgen Leth.

Gunner Møller Pedersen’s has always had a vision of ‘spatial music’ – music in which the location and movement of the music in the space are key compositional elements on equal footing with every other musical element. This vision inspired Gunner Møller Pedersen to work with electronic instruments at a time when it was neither easy nor regarded as smart, and he went on to become one of Denmark’s few pioneers within the field.

31. august kl. 17-20.30
Portrætsamtale i Festsalen ’Gunner Møller Pedersen: Mit Glyptotek’ kl. 17.00-18.30
Oplev ’ET LYDÅR’ i Vinterhaven kl. 10-21
