An extraordinary work of sound and light will come to life on Kulturnatten 2024 in the enormous B&W halls on Refshaleøen: SOM ILD OG VAND is an immersive experience of music, sound, lights and lasers in the impressive industrial halls that are normally closed for public access.

– DANISH BELOW –

With 70-meter-high ceilings, the huge halls were previously used for shipbuilding, and currently houses the stage sets of the Royal Danish Theatre.

The composer and electronic music pioneer Gunner Møller Pedersen wrote the spatial work SOM ILD OG VAND (‘Like Fire and Water’) in 1986, mixing electronic and acoustic sounds into timeless music.

SOM ILD OG VAND is one of Gunner Møller Pedersen’s most significant works, and it will be reinterpreted in an installation-based and site-specific production on Kulturnatten in a collaboration between the light and sound collective Båll & Brand, Denmark’s electronic music organization Strøm, and The Royal Danish Theatre.

With its enormous dimensions, the work creates an organic symphony of light and sound that floods the entire 562.500 m3 historic shipbuilding hall. The multi-channel sound set-up with four speaker towers will immerse the visitors in the soundscape of the music, creating a physical sound experience, moving from the active and extrovert world of fire to the calmer and more peaceful world of water.

“The music creates a very large space which is characteristic for eight-channel music. It’s the kind of music that puts the listener in the centre of the experience, instead of a band on stage being the focal point. The music itself creates the space – and becomes part of your inner landscape”, Gunner Møller Pedersen says.

The new production of SOM ILD OG VAND is part of the Strøm project Lydskatten, rescuing and disseminating the history of Danish electronic music.

With a Culture Night wristband, the sound and light installation can be visited continuously throughout the evening. The experience is 21 minutes long and will run in a loop (with small breaks in between) throughout the evening. Visitors can move about freely in the hall at their own pace and stay for as long as they want.
