“One of my goals is to enable these marginalized groups to reclaim the sound spaces they deserve”

After a month spent in Europe, the Canadian DJ and producer Honeydrip rounds it all off with a bassy 90 minute mix for Strøm along with an interview explaining her mission with community- and sound system building

Hi Tiana, thank you so much for doing this mix for us! Can you tell us a little bit about it?

This was recorded while I was on tour in Europe and UK. Specifically during my time in London where I got a cold so was able to slow down a bit and take the time to put this mix together.

This mix is basically tour memorabilia because it is a representation of the music I have been playing throughout my shows in Berlin, Glasgow, London, Malmö and Copenhagen.

Bass is often my favorite element in songs so there are some funky basses, but also very percussive elements, loads of choppy vocals, and overall vibes.

The mix showcases your inspiration from sound system culture, but outside the studio you are actually also in the process of building a real sound system – can you tell us about that process?

My subwoofers were built in 2023 and since then I have been slowly learning more about sound and speaker building. I started a collective called MORPH Sound System this year for FLINTA and LGBTQ+ members to learn more about sound system culture and the technical skills that come with speaker building.

One of my goals is to enable these marginalized groups to reclaim the sound spaces they deserve and really impact gender disparity in the music industry through technical and sound education. We have loads of little projects in the works and we ultimately want to have our own full sound system

The past month you’ve been touring in Europe, rounding it all off with a residency in our studio, how was this experience and how has it inspired you?

Everytime I tour I learn more about the realities of the industry and the realities about myself. This was the first time I paired touring shows with a music residency and it is most definitely a formula I want to keep up.

The whole idealistic vision of the producers making music in the hotel or plane while touring never applied to me. To be able to have a dedicated space at the Strøm studio, that was so welcoming, well equipped, and accessible – really allowed me to get into a creative flow and kept me focused during the week while then performing on the weekends.

I also met some really awesome people while in Copenhagen and loved the community that was a part of Kapelvej 44. With what I have worked on at the residency, I hope to release an EP soon.
