DJ CUNT takes you through a landscape of intense moods, curveballs and iconic left turns
DJ Cunt is the moniker of the trans-disciplinary artist based in Copenhagen. Their sets seem like a never-ending non-binary clusterfuck with deep passion for the roots of underground music. In their own ways they create worlds representing unrestricted chaos, love and pain – or as they describe it “from crying in the club to fucking a wall to screaming in agony”
Hey C, please tell us about this mix?
This mix is kind of like a collection of my favorite blends I have done the last year, so you are in for a rollercoaster of feelings. From crying in the club to fucking a wall to screaming in agony. That’s how I like it, playing those extremes. I could name all the genres like dembow, R&B, techno, moombathon, etc. as always I mix it all together to make something else than letting the genres define the mood/feeling.
What got you into DJ’ing in the first place, and what keeps you going??
I looooove music and have DJ’ed since 2018. Back then it was just for fun, and seeing people enjoy the nights I was curating, was really encouraging. Since then I learned more about the black and queer history that DJ’ing comes from. I also learned more in general about club culture from the global south that we here in the global north heavily try to capitalise and exploit. I want to pay homage to the people that came before and find a way to honour myself and let me be things I never thought I could be.
Being relatively new in the scene, yet quite experienced, do you have some good advice for DJ’s who are just starting out?
Don’t do it just because other people are doing it. It can be hard not just to feel like a glorified jukebox with no personality, and that you just have to please the crowd or whatever booker that books you. The most important thing I try to remind myself Is to do it for myself. Playing the music I love and want to share with the crowd, no matter how big or small it is and not just playing what I think is expected of me. The feeling of having poured your heart out and then having that one person left on the dance floor saying thank you is all I need to keep going. Oh yeah and sharing those spaces with people I care about is the best. Imagine being able to convey feelings through music! Fuck yeah I want to do that forever.
