UK sounds to strengthen the local scene

Premiering the 6th release by Copenhagen label BSP Bispebjerg, head honcho Daniel Savi (Savi DJ) and Frej Levin as Champagne Bruce created a fresh mix showcasing the debut album ‘Dancerecepten DKG Vol.1’ by Champagne Bruce himself.

Daniel, can you introduce us to your label BSP Bispebjerg?

Daniel: BSP Bispebjerg started in 2020 and we are trying to build a universe of Jungle, Garage, Breakbeat, Booty Tech and their derivative genres. We started the label in order to showcase and build a platform to strengthen the local scene and to release a bunch of heavy rolling bass belters.

What can we expect from this mix? – And can you elaborate on the Champagne Bruce project?

Bruce: This mix showcases my upcoming debut album, Dancerecepten: DKG Vol. 1. It’s UK Garage in Danish, hence “DKG.” All tracks have a bit of a speed garage vibe and are produced by some of the hottest DK Garage producers, like Main Phase, ELOQ, Lille Høg, and myself (wink wink). We also included a couple of unreleased tunes that didn’t make it to the final album for one reason or another. I think that’s beautiful.

We also have some amazing MCs featured on two tracks—Ena Cosovic from Fagget Fairys, in a sexy and unconventional duet! I’m also thrilled to be joined by the working-class heroes, BFL, on a fun and cheeky bassline tune.

My mission is to spread fun and laughter, self-empowerment, positive energy, and sexy vibes. I’m aiming to bring more bassline garage to the younger crowd, while adding the ecstatic vibe of MC’ing to a DJ mix. It’s a staple in UK culture but hasn’t been a big part of the DK scene when it comes to Garage.

Another message I want to get out there is that it’s absolutely possible to enjoy the club scene without alcohol and drugs. I used to be all about that, but life took a sharp turn, and I had to figure out how to keep raving without intoxication. I loved the rave scene too much to leave it, so I kept DJ’ing and started spitting bars over garage tunes. Now, I get to share my story and express all my emotions on the mic—even the angry ones—while staying radically nice and friendly at the same time.

As you both have  been involved in the Copenhagen scene for decades, how would you describe it now compared to when you were starting out?

Daniel & Bruce: It is way, way bigger, way more accessible; both in regard to that it seems less clique-y and also you don’t have to buy 300 vinyl records as an entrance fee to become a DJ.
Most importantly, it is much more diverse; both in regards to sound and people behind, we are glad to see a scene that in many ways seems broader and stronger than ever, having a healthy mix of genres and a lot of curiosity, but we miss all the empty warehouses and venues (and tunnels).

Do you have any good advice to newer DJ’s, producers and promoters?

Bruce: Unlock your fantasy, always get going in the studio and finish your tracks as a strict discipline. Look at failed projects as good practice and be patient, it takes time to become really good at anything – and not all tracks are supposed to be released. Create first, decide later. Just make music you yourself would like to listen to.
Daniel: Create the parties you would like to go to or you feel like are missing. Book people you like and learn from them, travel to other cities with bigger scenes to get inspiration, celebrate others – it is not a competition and please take care of both you physical and mental health.
