Goa, Lego and Smølfehits: Inside Lund & Rønde’s trance journey
For more than 15 years, the dynamic duo; brothers Aske and Osvald have been DJ’ing together as Lund & Rønde and individually as DJ Dogwalker and DJ Bondefar.
Both founding members of BunkerBauer; a DJ and party crew with an underground bunker who played a vital role in the Copenhagen techno scene for many years. Lund & Rønde run the label V.A.L.I.S. Records on which they’ve released plenty of Scandinavian acts, and recently also a double vinyl album from DJ Dogwalker himself. They have multiple releases on labels as Kontoret Records, Sacred Interface, Ute Records, Ooze Tales.
Their groovy basslines and charming dual-power energy have brought them around the world at numerous clubs, events and festivals. If you have yet to discover these underground gems, now is the time.
Hi Osvald and Aske, thanks a lot for recording this mix for us – can you tell us a little bit about it?
Well, the mix consists of oldschool Danish trance music. It seems to be the ever returning musical inspiration for us. It stems from a time period in electronic music, or at least in the trance scene, where genres weren’t defined and that created a more playful and not so rigid approach to making and playing music. I think we both kind of miss that in the scene today, so we try to bring it back both while playing but also producing. With that said we are not alone here in Copenhagen to feel inspired by this great type of music. You have extremely talented DJs and producers like Lasse Vind, Wendy, Lucy Headburn, Smuds, our labelhead Sam, Filen, Matriark, Ibon. Just to name a few who also have a passion for this type of music. We feel lucky that our favourite music is coming from this little weird country, which also has made it possible to connect with some of these old legends.
What got you interested in this type of music in the first place?
I think as kids growing up in the 80s and 90s a lot of the popular music was trance or eurodance with a female vocal and semi gibberish chorus song by a man. So if you remove the vocals you could potentially have a nice acid trance track. So I think throughout many hours of playing with Lego and listening to this stuff, we were both a bit prone to like this type of music. An honourable mention to the Smølferne series, with kids-friendly cover versions of popular eurotrance tracks. Fast forward a couple of years into the Green Day and Blink 182 phase of our life, we were playing Settlers of Catan with our dad while listening to this kind of rock music. After some time our dad stood up and said something like “I can’t take this anymore, we need to listen to some proper music” so he went over to the stereo system and took out “Goa-Head” volume 8 and played the Astral Projection – Mahadeva 99 remix. So from there on there was clearly a shift in how we perceived music. Shortly after we found out our dad had a proper collection of the first 10 “Destination Goa” releases, so it was mainly just to dig in. A couple of years passed and we moved in together in Copenhagen. Aske met the legendary and creator of the BunkerBauer, Jens Peter Löwe, who once again piqued Aske’s interest in electronic music. Jens had a lot of friends from Amager, who was also interested in electronic music. So we got a bunker and started to DJ and have parties in it, which just grew our interests even more, because now we had our own little 40 square meter club underground in the city center without bothering any neighbors.
When did you realize that you wanted to extend your (literal) brotherhood to a (life long) musical collaboration?
Well it was never really a decision, we have always played together, shared friends and common interests. So when we lived together and we bought our first little shitty Hercules midi mixer, it just felt normal or natural to do it together. We very shortly after bought technics 1210” instead of that horrible midi mixer we had. We are brothers, lived together, bought music and equipment together. By time we have also started new projects, both solo projects like DJ Bondefar and DJ Dogwalker, and together with Lasse Vind we have a project called Item 9, under which we’ll soon release an album
