“This was never a trend to me but a cultural identity”

With baile funk at the core and a strong international club aesthetic, this mix moves across baile, batida, kuduro, dembow, afro house, and reggaeton – Fun and charmingly tied together with persistent vocals and anthems by Röyksopp, ABBA and more.

Together with her sister, Jungle Julia runs Baile House, a party concept hosted at venues such as Ikke Åben and Sigurd Klubben. Jungle Julia has delivered mixtapes for radios in Australia, New Zealand and Denmark, moving seamlessly between local scenes and global sounds.

Hi Julia, thanks for doing this mix for us! Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Thank you for having me — being invited to Strøm made me feel very seen.

This mix is a love letter to the sounds that pulled me into DJ’ing in the first place: baile funk, afrohouse, batida, bolha and everything living in between. It’s Portuguese-language driven, heavy on percussion, and constantly shifting in key and texture.

I’m deeply obsessed with Brazilian and Afro-Portuguese music and culture. Seeing these sounds finally take over the world feels inevitable, because they’ve been shaping me for the past eight years. This was never a trend to me but a cultural identity.

There are producers I simply can’t exist in a set without. DJ Lycox and Vanyfox are essential to the music I want to push forward. Their influence runs through this mix like a pulse. This mix is a tribute and a celebration.

What got you into these sounds?

Growing up, I was surrounded by a wide spectrum of music, and that openness never left me. I still listen freely between genres — from R&B and jazz to metal, ’80s pop, Y2K, alternative rock, reggaeton and trip-hop.

Some of my favorite artists, like Radiohead, Thievery Corporation, and Massive Attack, really thrive on versatility and constant reinvention, and I think that unpredictability has always drawn me in. Across different forms of art, I tend to be most inspired by things that refuse to be boxed in — which is probably why I’ve stayed curious about exploring music, language, and culture.

What made you want to become a DJ? and how did you start out?

I’d wanted to DJ for almost a decade, but for a long time I never found the spark to fully start. Still, I was always curating playlists — building worlds, testing ideas, imagining how genres could collide if I ever learned how to mix. Thankfully, that instinct never left.

The real turning point came when I moved to Paris in 2018. That’s when the itch became impossible to ignore, and I knew my passion for music had to take physical form. What inspired me most was how openminded people were, in a country known for holding tightly to its language, people moved freely to music they didn’t even understand. It was a constant rotation of genres and worlds colliding. That experience reshaped how I approach DJ’ing. I took it upon myself to bring that same openness and way of mixing back to Copenhagen as it was something I desperately needed myself.
