For hundreds of years, bells in city squares have called people into the city centre. This August, a modern interpretation of the city square bells will resonate across Solbjerg Plads in ‘A Place of Transit’, composed by Xuri & John Cleworth.
32 speakers are installed below ground in 32 wells all around the city square of Solbjerg Plads (Bent Fabricius-Bjerres Plads) on Frederiksberg, creating an underground sound system and a unique musical platform below our feet called Lydbrøndene (The Sound Wells).
This multichannel sound system allows for musicians and sound artists to create multidimensional and dynamic soundscapes that curious visitors and passers-by can walk through and explore on their own.
This August, Strøm has invited Xuri and John Cleworth to create a piece for The Sound Wells, and they focus on the square as a place of transit:
How does the flow of bikes, commuters from the metro, shoppers from Frederiksberg Centret, the CBS students, the readers from the library, and the bells of Frederiksberg Rådhus all come together in a sonic installation?
Like the people crossing Solbjerg Plads, the sounds of their composition are constantly in motion. The piece is never fixed, but organic, alive and moving. Visitors are invited to wander through the installation, where every route offers a different listening experience, and no two visits are the same.
You can experience their creation transforming the square August 10th to August 16th at specific times during the day. Listen for the call – exact times will be announced soon!
About Xuri & John Cleworth
The married couple, Susanne and John, appear on stage in different forms: As Xuri & John Cleworth, they create experimental electronic music for labels such as Raster in Germany, and as Atikka, they perform live trance music (you might have experienced them at Trans Metro Express 2023). Together they have toured Europe, Australia, and Japan.
John is a classically trained tonmeister from DKDM and works as creative director at Unmute and has created sound design for brands such as Bang & Olufsen.
Susanne works as a graphic designer – and as Xuri, she has released music and performed for ambient and electronic labels and festivals across Europe.
