On the 100th anniversary of Else Marie Pade’s birth, a group of musicians at the intersection of electronic and classical music honor the pioneering Danish composer with a tribute concert. Discover new aspects of one of Denmark’s most influential composers through a mix of rare acoustic and electronic works, alongside contemporary reinterpretations of her music.

— Danish text below —
This anniversary concert is a unique opportunity to hear Else Marie Pade’s very first purely electronic work Syv Cirkler: The original tape will be played on stage from her own Lyrec reel-to-reel tape recorder.

Although Else Marie Pade is best known for her electronic works and field recordings, a significant part of her creative output also consists of compositions for acoustic instruments. Only recently have people begun to explore these, so they are neither recorded nor often performed – but this evening, Vokalensemblet Vigdis will present some of her choral music.

Pade’s life could easily be made into a feature film: The incredible story of how she was captured by the Gestapo at the age of 18 during World War II and carved notes into the cell wall will unfold this evening when jazz singer Kira Martini and the duo Dybfølt play their interpretations of ‘Songs from a Wall’, released on Dacapo earlier this year.

Jakob Kullberg will perform her piece A Game for Cello – accompanied by visuals inspired by video game graphics, following the movements of the music.

And sound artist and composer Jacob Kirkegaard will perform parts of the piece Svævninger, which he created in collaboration with Else Marie Pade.

Last but not least, we will all join in singing the traditional birthday song – the one with the instruments! – featuring tape loops, ring modulators, and tone generators.

We hope to see you at this grand celebration of the grandmother of electronic music.
